Embracing Your Unique Yoga Journey in Geneva

The Importance of Ego-Free Practice

It is very important for you to leave your ego at the door before flowing through a class. Don’t compare yourself to others. Practicing yoga is not about looking perfect but rather about feeling what’s perfect for you. We all have different bodies, injuries, and flexibility levels. It’s going to look different regardless of how many years you practice. My practice isn’t symmetrical because of what’s going on with my body, and that’s okay!

Simplifying Your Yoga Experience

It doesn’t have to be complicated. The whole practice of yoga is built up in preparation for Savasana at the end of practice. That’s always what we are working towards in every single class. The hardest part of class can, of course, be the postures. But really, it’s about your ability to finish a 60-minute class and sit with your mind in complete stillness—no thoughts, no noise, no distractions. Yoga is about going inwards, not how well you can achieve an arm balance posture.

The Role of Heat in Yoga

Sweating is, of course, a sign of a good workout, but yoga doesn’t have to be heated to receive the same benefits. Heat is important, but this can be achieved in a sauna, a heated class if preferred, or a cardio burst to heat up the muscles. Yoga in a heated room is more about lymphatic release and detoxification of the system through postures like eagle pose. Otherwise, non-heated yoga allows you to reach the same depths you would go to in a heated class.

The Challenge of Breath

Breath cues, breath cues, breath cues! In my honest opinion, the hardest part of yoga isn’t the postures—it’s the breathing. I always need to be reminded to breathe, which sounds ridiculous, I know. After practicing for so long, I still need the reminder, and that’s okay. For me, yoga is when my mind switches off, and sometimes that literally means forgetting when to breathe. That’s quite literally why I cue every single breath when I teach. It’s for those who are like me and need the repetition and reminder.

The Art of Demonstration

During my 200-hour CPY teacher training, I was advised to try not to demo too much. Understandable, but the reality was that some days I was flowing through a good half of my sequence with my students. Now, I have taught an equal amount of beginners and seasoned practitioners. Most of the time, I’m cueing them through the poses, and all of a sudden, there I am, automatically demo-ing.

I find it’s important to visually give your students a model of what a pose looks like. Connecting with them on that level shows them you can practice what you teach. I have found that this really helps give new students a focal point and allows them not to compare themselves to others. It reassures them that it’s okay not to know what a pose is. Demo-ing in your class is super inclusive, and I stand by that.

Finding Community in Yoga

One of the most beautiful aspects of yoga is the community it fosters. In Geneva, we have a vibrant group of individuals who come together to share this journey. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, there's a place for you. The connections made on and off the mat can be transformative.

When we practice together outdoors, surrounded by nature, it enhances our experience. The fresh air, the sounds of the environment, and the shared energy create a unique atmosphere. It’s not just about the poses; it’s about the relationships we build and the support we offer one another.

Outdoor Yoga: A Unique Experience

Outdoor yoga offers a refreshing change from the traditional studio setting. Imagine practicing under the open sky, feeling the sun on your skin, and hearing the rustle of leaves. This connection to nature can deepen your practice. It allows you to ground yourself and find peace amidst the chaos of daily life.

In Geneva, we’re fortunate to have beautiful parks and serene spots perfect for outdoor yoga. These locations provide a tranquil backdrop that enhances our practice. The experience becomes more than just physical; it’s a holistic journey that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit.

The Healing Power of Yoga

Yoga is not just about flexibility or strength; it’s a path to healing. Many of us come to the mat seeking relief from stress, anxiety, or physical pain. The practice offers tools to navigate these challenges. Through mindful movement and breath, we can find solace and clarity.

As we flow through our sequences, we learn to listen to our bodies. This awareness helps us identify areas of tension and release them. The healing process is unique for everyone, but the journey is universal. We all seek connection, both with ourselves and with others.

Inspiring Your Yoga Journey

Every yoga journey is personal. It’s filled with ups and downs, moments of triumph, and challenges. Embrace your path, and don’t be afraid to share it with others. Your story can inspire someone else to begin or deepen their practice.

As we gather in our community, let’s celebrate our differences and support one another. Whether you’re trying a new pose or simply showing up, every effort counts. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress and connection.
