Yoga’s Transformative Power for Women’s Health: My PCOS Journey

Yoga, an ancient practice spanning centuries, offers a wealth of physical, mental, and emotional benefits for those who weave it into their daily or weekly routines. As a certified Vinyasa and hot yoga teacher, I’ve discovered its profound impact on women’s health, particularly through my personal battle with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This blog post shares my journey and the key benefits that have reshaped my life, inviting you to join our growing community for weekly insights.

My Personal Journey with PCOS

My story began at 15 when I was diagnosed with PCOS, a condition marked by ovarian cysts, irregular periods, and unexplained weight gain. Active in my school gym and weight training, I loved a good snack but couldn’t understand why my body resisted my efforts. Hip pain and a locking sensation during squats led to MRIs, ruling out structural issues from my breech birth (which required a brace for six months). Instead, the scans revealed 15 cysts, shifting my focus to hormonal health.

For four years, I battled with hormone treatments to balance estrogen and lower testosterone, a struggle that weighed heavily on my mental and physical well-being. It wasn’t until my first year of university that I stopped the pills and stumbled into yoga near campus. Paired with a simple diet of protein and vegetables, this shift was accidental but life-changing. Hot yoga’s detoxifying sweat helped me shed pounds weekly, and by the COVID-19 pandemic summer, blood tests showed normalized testosterone and cortisol levels. My doctor confirmed my approach was working—yoga and mindful eating had turned the tide.

Today, as a certified yoga teacher practicing daily, with saunas a few times a week and basic supplements, I’m fitter than ever. My PCOS is largely under control, a testament to this holistic path.

Key Benefits of Yoga for Women’s Health

Yoga’s benefits for women, especially those with PCOS, are both practical and profound. Here’s how it transformed my health:

  • Lymphatic Drainage & Movement: Dynamic flows and inversions like Garudasana (Eagle Pose) compress lymph nodes, promoting drainage when released. Twists and Pavanamuktasana (Wind Removing Pose) stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding waste elimination and immune function. These gentle movements tackled my PCOS-related water retention and improved circulation around my hips and pelvic region, supporting ovarian health.

  • Cortisol Regulation: PCOS often ties to cortisol imbalances—high cortisol leads to elevated insulin and testosterone, worsening symptoms. Restorative yoga, breathwork, and gentle flows activated my parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest mode), reducing stress hormones and fostering hormonal balance. This calming practice became my anchor.

  • Detoxing Through Sweat: Hot yoga and sauna sessions induce deep sweating, releasing stored toxins and reducing inflammation. This detox shed excess water weight, boosted my metabolism, and cleared my skin by supporting liver function—crucial for hormonal health in PCOS. The regular sweat sessions were a game-changer for my body’s reset.

Why Yoga Works and What’s Next

This isn’t medical advice but my personal observations—yoga’s combination of movement, breath, and heat outperformed traditional treatments for my PCOS. I’m not claiming a 100% cure; I’m still learning about my body. Yet, it’s reversed most symptoms, grounding me through breath and detoxing via lymphatic flows and heat. This ancient practice’s modern resurgence makes sense—it’s adaptable and powerful.
